Toddler Program

Ages 2 years old.

The toddlers at I Can Preschool and Child Care benefit from educator interactions that are highly receptive to their individual needs. Our toddler program supports school readiness by introducing students to the expectations of future classroom settings and early education experiences. These efforts promote the social - emotional, language, cognitive, and perceptual and motor development of our youngest learners. We provide a nurturing environment that cultivates frequent opportunities for learning, relationship building, and family engagement. Our research-based curriculum and responsive caregiving techniques are guided by the publications made available by the California Department of Education (CDE) Child Development Division, and the California Department of Social Services (CDSS).

Curriculum

The curriculum that is provided for our toddler students focuses on the five domains of development as outlined in the California Infant - Toddler Learning and Development Foundations (ITLDF), Second Edition, published by the CDSS in 2025. The domains are represented in the following areas of early childhood education, social and emotional development, approaches to learning, language development, cognitive development, and perceptual and motor development. Our Schedule of Daily Activities and our Daily Lesson Plans directly align with the ITLDF for ages 24 - 36 months. Our curriculum framework is inspired by the California Framework for Infant – Toddler Learning and Development, published by the CDSS in 2025. Curriculum implementation is structured by the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Early Childhood Education. Applying UDL safeguards our ability to deliver early education that is culturally responsive, equitable, inclusive, and flexible.

Environment

The environment of our toddler classroom focuses on educator – student interactions, that are high quality in teacher sensitivity, conducting facilitated exploration, and creating a relational climate. Toddler environments are carefully designed through the utilization of the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS – 3). Applying an environment assessment tool helps sustain environmental quality, and safety using age-appropriate materials, and classroom furniture. Environment planning is directed by The Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Program Guidelines, Second Edition, developed by the CDE, Early Learning and Care Division. Teacher – Student interactions are guided by Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP). Utilizing DAP guarantees that the early learning environment is safe, nurturing, and supportive.
